This week on the podcast it’s special guest Véronique Savoye from France with Véro.
We met by the banks of the flooding Seine to discuss the almost ritual-like tradition of the apéro.
Now, if you were to look up apéro online, you’d learn that it’s a colloquial reference to apéritif, which is a French word that comes from the Latin verb aperire, which means to open. That doesn’t help much, does it?
And that’s the point! You can’t understand apéro from a dictionary, it’s a state of mind, a concept. It’s drinks with friends. It’s meeting at the canal for wine and cheese before dinner. It’s a social occasion.
But there are lots of cultural rules and faux pas that come with it. What happens if you’re invited to an apéro at a French person’s house? Should you bring wine? Flowers? Will you eat dinner? When should you leave? What’s an apéro dinatoire?
