The Plague | Arnold Böcklin | 1898

"Plague," created in 1898 by Swiss symbolist artist Arnold Böcklin, is a tempera painting housed in the Kunstmuseum Basel, reflecting the artist's fixation on themes like war, pestilence, and death. This artwork depicts the grim figure of Death mounted on a bat-like winged creature, soaring through the streets of a medieval European town.

The painting's colour palette is dominated by pale green, a hue often linked to decay. Black and dull browns are also prominent, particularly in the attire of the figures in the middle and background, who are seen diving for cover from Death's ominous presence. A striking contrast is the vibrant red cloth of a woman in the mid-foreground, draped over the body of another woman fallen victim to Death. This red is the sole bright colour in an otherwise muted composition.
