Overview
Grown primarily for their wonderful fruit the Pineapple takes two years for the fruit to be ready for harvest.
In the first year there is a stunning inflorescence with yellow to red bracts, but the fruit doesn't develop until the second year.
The sword shaped leaves have tiny thorns along the leaf margin and grow in a rosette around a central stem.
Soil: Fertile well drained soil.
Maintenance: Plant in location that receives a minimum of half a day of full sun. In late spring to early summer fertilise every two weeks.
Spray leaves twice a week and water regularly during the summer.
To propagate, cut the fruit when ripe - the rosette of leaves on top should be about 10cm long. Cut off top of fruit including the leaves, allow to dry for 24 hours and then plant in damp potting mix, place in a germination area or cover with a plastic bag until roots have formed. Then transfer to larger pot or plant out if your climate is warm and tropical.
Diseases: None of note.
Other Species: Ananas comosus 'Porteanus' - have a yellow stripe down the centre of the leaf.
Ananas comosus 'Variegatus' - have cream marginal stripes and sometimes red tints.
Comments: Ananas ananassoides is a synonym for Ananas comosus.
